Purpose in Every Path: Autism & Faith

Parenting our autistic children is one of the most faith stretching and heart expanding journeys we will ever walk. And one of the hardest truths, one that no professional, no chart, and no evaluation can soften, is this: we cannot predict outcomes.

We cannot map out the future.

We cannot guarantee a straight line of progress.

We cannot forecast who will soar, who will struggle, or how the story will unfold.

Some kids begin on what clinicians call the higher end of the spectrum and remain there. Some make incredible gains. Others start with more significant support needs and blossom in ways no one expected. And yes, some regress, plateau, or shift in ways that leave us grieving, adjusting, and learning all over again.

There is no formula.

There is no timeline.

There is no earthly way to know what will happen.

But there is something we can do.

We can show up.

We can work diligently with our children.

We can advocate, love, nurture, and create environments where they can thrive in their own way and at their own pace.

We can pray with the kind of faith that steadies us when the path feels uncertain.

And we can cling to the promise of Romans 8:28 — “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Not some things.

Not only the easy things.

All things.

Even the detours.

Even the regressions.

Even the victories we never saw coming.

Even the outcomes we did not choose.

Our children’s stories are not random. They are not mistakes. They are not defined by diagnostic labels or developmental charts. Their journey, every twist, every triumph, every challenge, is held in the hands of a God who wastes nothing and works through everything.

So we keep going.

We keep loving.

We keep praying.

We keep trusting that whatever happens, it will be for His glory.

And in the middle of the unknown, we remember:

Our kids are not projects.

They are not predictions.

They are purpose.
